January 26, 2014 (Newswire) - PULSE of NY, a New York patient safety organization, announced today that registration has opened for Long Island's first patient safety conference on diagnostic error and patient engagement. It will be held at the Holiday Inn in Plainview, NY on March 3, 2014, and will focus on efforts to improve diagnosis outcomes.
Diagnostic error is the leading cause of medical malpractice claims in the US, and is estimated to cause 40,000-80,000 deaths annually. One in every ten diagnoses is wrong, according to the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine.
The conference, titled

"PULSE of NY has been educating the public about patient safety practices since 1996," says Ilene Corina, President and founder of the grassroots organization. "Now we hope members of the public will hear from national leaders on the subject, and change their behavior to avoid misdiagnosis."
